Abba Johannes in a church forest

Scattered across the arid landscape of Ethiopia are thousands of small, verdant sanctuaries, and at the center of each stands a church. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is one of the oldest forms of Christianity and the forests it protects are the last vestiges of an ancient and disappearing ecosystem. Having gained unprecedented access to these holy sites, Church Forest uncovers the rich heritage and troubled future of these mysterious groves and encounters their unique population of devout monks and eccentric western scientists. Personal histories, religious scriptures and scientific hypotheses combine to form a kaleidoscopic reverie of man and nature.
